  • Embarked Wellington, 11 October 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 29 December 1916, and marched in to Sling Camp.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 11 February 1917; joined 2nd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, 13 March 1917.
    Wounded in action, 9 June 1917 (gun shot wound, penis); admitted to 77th Field Ambulance, 10 June 1917, and transferred same day to No 2 Casualty Clearing Station; to No 2 Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, 10 June 1917; to England, 15 June 1917, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 25 June 1917; discharged to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 1 August 1917.
    Detached to School of Instruction, Tidworth, 30 November 1917, and appointed Lance Corporal while attending School; rank of Lance Corporal confirmed, 26 January 1918.
    Promoted Corporal, 23 April 1918.
    Found guilty, District Court Martial, 27 May 1918, of (1) absent without leave in that he at Sling Camp on 5 May 1918 absented himself from his quarters without leave, being found on the Bulford Road at 10 pm without a pass; (2) when on Active Service, disobeying a laul command given by his Superior in that he on the Bulford Road near Sling Camp on 5 May 1918 when personally ordered by SergeantH.W. Locketts, NZ Provost Corps on mounted patrol duty, to give his name and number refused to do so; (3) being in arrest attempting to escape in that he on Bulford Road on 5 May 1918 when ordered by Sgt Lockett to accompany him to a guard room ran away: sentenced to be reduced to the ranks, and to undergo 28 days' detention; forfeited 28 days' pay.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 18 September 1918; rejoined 2nd Bn, in the field, 23 September 1918.
    Promoted Corporal, 1 October 1918.
    Promoted Sergeant, 3 January 1919.
    Detached to United Kingdom for return to New Zealand, 11 February 1919; marched in to Sling Camp from France, 18 February 1919.
    Commenced return to New Zealand from Tilbury on board SS 'Pakeha', 12 April 1919; discharged, 28 June 1919.
    Total war service: 3 years 7 days (of which 2 years 233 days were abroad) AWMM
