John Percy Frend was my grandmother's third brother; he was born at Davington, Kent, England in 1879. He emigrated to New Zealand sailing on the SS Tainui, leaving London on 11th November 1908. He married Miss Elizabeth Stenhouse Robertson in 1910. He volunteered in October 1915, his service record shows him as farmer from Carterton in the Wairarapa. He sailed as a member of the NZ Rifle Brigade on 16 October 1916 on the SS Willochra as part of the 9th Reinforcements, 3rd Battalion, G Company. The ship arrived in Devonport, England on 28th December 1916. John was listed among the wounded in June 1917. His wife died at sea on the voyage from New Zealand to England in the first half of 1918. John returned to New Zealand after the war, re-married and raised a family. He died in Auckland in 1945.
