      James Barter was transferred to France in April 1916, three months later he fell ill with pneumonia and was repatriated to England for medical attention. After a spell at No.5 General Hospital, London he then convalesced at Hornchurch in Essex. (Church, p.90) AWMM

    • "In September 1916 James was posted to Codford Command depot. He remained in England for the rest of his time, and on 11 June 1917 was taken on strength of the ANZAC Provost Corps (Military Police) with rank of Lance Corporal. In February 1918 he transferred to No.1 NZGH, Brockenhurst staff, and was often a patient himself. He had contracted meningitis on his final admission on 25 July and died on 3 August." (Church, p.90) AWMM
    • He was a Lance Corporal with the Wellington Regiment, N.Z.E.F.

      He was 34 and the son of the late Edwin James and of Mary Maria Barter of 20, Britannia Rd., Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, England.
      He is remembered on the grave of his parents at Southend-on-Sea, Sutton Road Cemetery, Essex Public - Geoffrey - Researcher - 18 May 2018 - Gravestone inscription, CWGC and local knowledge.
