    Report
  • Sergeant William Craig KEARNEY, who died of wounds on 9 August 1915 at Gallipoli, was the second son of Mr Daniel Kearney of Ardmore. He was born in Coatbridge, Scotland where his education commenced. This was continued at Waiokaraka and Tararu School, Thames, NZ, also at the Auckland Technical School. He then went with his parents to the country and whilst there was a member of the 3rd Auckland Mounted Rifles for five and a half years before he became a Territorial. He was a good recruiting non-commissioned officer. Before he went home to join the main Expeditionary Force, he removed his stripes and the star which he obtained for three years efficient service, saying he would win them back on active service. He was promoted to corporal before leaving Auckland and met his death as a sergeant. He was a keen athlete, playing in the Waiora Rovers, which won the cup on three occasions
