    Palmer recruit enlisted in Auckland 1916 - trained at HMS Hermione - posted to the Coastal Forces and was based at HMS Arrogant, serving aboard a Motor Launch. By the end of 1917, he was promoted to CPOMM and posted to ML 241, and may have served on this vessel until the Armistice. He fought at Zeebrugge in April 1918 and at Ostend in May 1918. His Commanding Officer commended his mechanical skills in keeping the engines in operation and his great devotion to duty during the attacks. In 1919 he was discharged and demobilised to return to New Zealand. Reported September 1918 as serving at the shore establishment AWMM
