  • Two different men have very similar names and service numbers - Alfred Abraham Phillips (10/4177A) and Alfred Phillips 10/4177. Defence conflated them on the Embarkation Rolls in 1917.

Alfred Abraham PHILLIPS was born in Apiti 20 Nov 1898, the son of Thomas PHILLIPS and Sarah Ruth CURTEIS, who were divorced in 1912. Both parents were NZ born - father in Kaiwharawhara (1874), mother in Halcombe (1879). His second given name, Abraham, recognises his grandfather, Abraham PHILLIPS (1845-1920), who served in the New Zealand Wars as a member of the Wellington Rangers.

Husband of Constance Phillips nee Goddard, Browns Bay, Auckland.

Military service: Home Defence. Northern Military District; 9th Heavy Battery, Kauri Point

He increased his age at WW1 attestation, he was 17 years 4 months. Family write "It would have been natural for Alfred Abraham PHILLIPS to have named his sister as NOK because he and his sister Eva Laura were raised in Gisborne from around 1912 (with his step-brother) by his step-grandmother, their father out of the picture at that time."

He died in Auckland 15 October 1973, was cremated at Purewa Crematorium 17 October 1973 and his ashes buried at North Shore Memorial Park, Auckland. AWMM
