VETERAN OF TWO WARS - MR. WILLIAM ELLIOTT DEATH FOLLOWS ACCIDENT The death occurred recently as the result of an accident at Kihikihi of Mr. William Elliot, late of the East Coast & Gisborne.
The late Mr. Elliot was born in H.B. in 1881 & was educated in H.B. & Rotomo. He served in the NZ Forces during the South African War, being a trooper in the 7th Cngt After the Boer War he came to the East Coast & was for some years at Tauwhareparae, Mangatokerau and Uawa In 1911 he married Patricia Dobson, Tolaga Bay. Mr Elliot saw active service again during the Great War, leaving NZ with the 16th Rfmts, & served throughout the Palestine campaign, entering Jerusalem with Field Marshal Viscount Allenby’s forces in 1918
After the war he returned to Gisborne & for a number of years was connected with various motor services, being among the number who may be regarded as pioneers of motor transport in the district. For a time he was in partnership with Mr W Whitfield in running the once wellknown Whitfield’s Motor Service. During this time he enjoyed the reputation of being a most capable, courteous and efficient driver.
Of late years Mr. Elliot has been living in the Otorohanga district. He is survived by his wife & one son, Mi-. C. W. Elliot, Gisborne
