For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 4th inst. during the attack north of Le Quesnoy this man did continuous and gallant work as a Company stretcher bearer, under very heavy artillery and machine-gun fire. On reaching the point of assembly intense artillery fire was encountered and many casualties resulted so that it became necessary to move troops more distance forward of the enemy barrage line. Pte Bartle remained behind attending to the wounded in the midst of the enemy barrage and after rendering first aid secured other men to assist him in carrying them back. His conduct throughout was magnificent and showed him possessed of great courage and a fine sense of duty. London Gazette 17 June 1919, p7700, Rec No 3182 AWMM
