  • Son of John and Margaret Turner

Husband of Fanny Claudia Turner (nee Waymouth); father of Bernard Walter (1900); Arthur Laurie (1903); Frederick Oliver (1906) and Alison Mary (1910).

He was in the Army Postal Service, since he worked in the Post Office. Family think that he was in England for his whole war service. Apart from the photo, the only item that handed down by the family was his autograph book when he attended a Scout function when he was overseas. It contains autographs such as Lord Baden Powell, the Chief Scout and his wife, the Chief Guide.

He began service as a sorter and was promoted to Sergeant in December. He reverted to rank on transfer to the 3rd Reserve Battalion, Auckland, Headquarters, Details in February 1917 and was then taken on strength for the New Zealand Army Postal Corps with the rank of Sapper. He served in Sling and London at Headquarters and was promoted to Lance Corporal in March 1919.

Returned to New Zealand aboard the Port Melbourne, January 1919.

Served for 2 years 133 days; all but 42 days were served overseas.

    War service: England
Embarked Wellington, 7 December 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 18 February 1917, and reverted to the ranks.
Attached to Field Post Office, Sling Camp, 19 February 1917.
Detailed 'On Command', Base Post Office, London, 7 April 1917; taken on strength, 14 July 1917.
Apoointed Lance Corporal, 21 March 1918.
Marched in to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 14 September 1918.
Commenced return to New Zealand from Liverpool on board HT 'Port Melbourne', 25 January 1919; discharged (termination of period of engagement), 11 April 1919.
War service: 2 years 133 days (of which 2 years 91 days were overseas)
    Medal: British War Medal

Note: age discrepancy. Date of birth given (several times) as 1897; first child born 1900; apparent age stated as 36.7. Correct date of birth would be appear to 1877. Parents: John and Margaret TURNER (both b. Auckland) AWMM
