Next of Kin: Mrs M. Kettle, Whangarei (Roll of Honour, Auckland Province 1914-1918 (Volume 1)) AWMM
    • John James (Jack) Kettle, my Great Uncle, was a loved and respected member of his family. He was killed in action on 4 October 1917 (Third Battle of Ypres), 100 years ago today. He was 29 years old.

Jack was a good athlete and his youth was spent on the family farm at Otaika before he moved to Drury. He loved his dogs. The family enjoyed many picnics together and Jack was adored by his sisters, Lizzie, Maggie (my grandmother) and Alice. Jack and Alice were particularly fond of each other.

Jack's father, George William Kettle, also died in 1917 and Alice (Hannah Alice Kettle) was distraught at the loss of both family members. Consequently, she was cared for by a nurse. In May 1918, Alice's body was found in a creek below a waterfall. She had head injuries, but the coroner was unable to say whether her death was accidental or suicide. Alice was 21 when she died. (see paperspast)

With much respect for the Great Uncle Jack I never met. Your photo has been ever-present in my life and I will remember you, particularly on Anzac Day, and pass on your story to your sister Maggie's descendants. You were a fine, upstanding and loving family member. Your Great Niece, Anne 4.10.2017 Public - Anne - Other relative - 4 October 2017 - Various
    • Thank you Anne for this information about your Great Uncle. John James Kettle is also my Great Uncle and I have looked at his photo for many years and wondered about him and the sort of person he was. I knew and loved his namesake John James Kettle, my uncle who was the gentlest soul you could meet. Public - Glenis - Other relative - 12 November 2018 - Family sources
