      In the course of a letter to his mother, Mr. Aubrey G. Akroyd writes from King George Hospital, Rotorua, under date of July 5th : — "On Saturday we got word, that General Birdwood would be arriving by car from Taupo and Napier so the boys went some of the way down the road and held a rope across the road to stop the car. The acting-matron of the hospital gave Lady Birdwood a bouquet ; and then the boys tied a rope on to the front axle of the car, and pulled it to the Grand Hotel. On Sunday morning the General came up to see the boys at the hospital. After going through the wards he went to the gymnasium, where all the 'up' patients were assembled. After the Colonel had introduced the General, the adjutant stood up and read, 'Private A. G. Akroyd.' Then followed that rigmarole that was in the paper, and then the General pinned the D.C.M. on me. I've got nothing against the Prince, but I am glad that I had the medal from 'Birdie,' instead of the Prince. The general made a very nice speech — a lot about the D.C.M. being the best medal one can get. 'Birdie' had a launch trip in the afternoon. I had several chats with the general, also with his wife and kiddy. They are all most unaffected and nice to the 'diggers'.
