      Military Medal - 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the attack on Grevillers on 24th August 1918 he was a platoon sergeant. The Battalion on the right not having started Sergeant Barr led half the Platoon through their area to keep our flank clear thus ably assisting the advance. Later on reaching the wire South-West of Grevillers a machine gun opened fire on the party but was rushed and put out of action by the Sergeant. He showed great coolness and presence of mind during the advance and subsequent consolidation.' - 'London Gazette'- 11/02/1919 AWMM

  • Embarked Wellington, 30 December 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 2 February 1917. Taken on strength, 3rd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, and posted to 15th Company, 15 April 1917.
    Proceeded overseas to France, 28 May 1917.
    Appointed Lance Corporal, in the field, 20 September 1917. Promoted Corporal, 24 November 1917. Appointed Lance Sergeant, 10 January 1918.
    Detached to School of Instruction, 14 January 1918; rejoined unit from detachment, 1 February 1918.
    Transferred to 3rd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, 21 February 1918.

    Joined 2nd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, 26 April 1918.
    On leave to United Kingdom, 27 July 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 14 August 1918.
    Wounded in action, 30 August 1918 (gun shot wound, right arm: slight), and admitted to 1/2 East Lancashire Field Ambulance; transferred to Casualty Clearing Station, 30 August 1918, and thence by Ambulance Train No 8 to No 6 General Hospital, Rouen, 1 September 1918. Transferred to England, 3 September 1918, and admitted to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 4 September 1918; discharged to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 17 September 1918.
    Awarded Military Medal for gallantry in the field.
    Found guilty, Codford, 20 December 1918, of being absent without leave: awarded forfeiture of 1 day's pay.
    Commenced return to New Zealand on board SS 'Corinthic', 12 March 1919; discharged, 21 May 1919.
    Total war service: 2 years 266 days (of which 2 years 115 days were abroad).
    Medals: Military Medal, British War Medal, Victory Medal
