  • John Baxter was my great grandfather. He returned home to his farm in Seaward Downs, passing away in Dec 1941 aged 68. He and is wife Ada, née Swain are buried in Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill. He was 42 when he enlisted, and could have opted out due to his age and occupation. He is a first cousin to Archie Baxter, the conscientious objector, and this may have influenced his decision. Riverton museum have him in their display.

  • Im not sure that I have the right John Baxter. While researching the Baxters who are distant cousins I found John Baxter 1877-1917. John must have been nearly 40 when he enlisted as a replacement so he was close to the age limit. He was among the many lost at Passchendaele. He was married with his life to look forward to.
    Rest in peace John -you are remembered.
