  • Eric Knight was a mate of my grandfather (George McLaren- 12/2419) in WW1. They were in Tuakau NZ & joined up to the 3rd (Auckland) Company, 1st Auckland Battalion.

They left with the 5th Reinforcements arriving on Gallipoli on the 8th of August 1915, just as the Battle of Chunk Bair was heating up. They we sent straight away up to Rhododendron Ridge and manned trenches below the summit.

Eric was killed by artillery fire on just their 2nd day on Gallipoli. George was next to him in the trench when he was killed. George was slightly wounded by the same shell.

George had written home to his mother (my great grandmother) detailing incident of Eric's death. I've attached a copy of the letter.

George wrote and subsequently visited Eric's family several times when on leave, or stationed in Oxford in 1918 for his officers commission.

We will remember Pte Eric Knight, may he rest in peace.
