  • Attested as single. he appears to have married, his widow is recorded on the service records as Mrs A. Ainslee C/o Mrs (?illegible), Park Close, Brockenhurst.

    He volunteered to be part of a New Zealand Company that would dig tunnels between the opposing lines under 'no man's land' in order to charge the enemy's line with high explosives.

    August 15 1917 William Ainslie was wounded in his back near Basseville with the consequence of paraplegia. He was transferred to No. 1 NZGH, Brockenhurst where he died a month later. (Church, p.105) AWMM
