  • Manuka then transfer to Morea at Sydney and Mashobra at Bombay for Suez.

Charles was one of twins and his brother Albert Edward died early on 25 April 1901 at Punakitere farm at Taheke on the Hokianga Harbour where their parents were also the butchers and shopkeepers. At that time the twins were limbers in the Kauri forest and collecting Kauri gum.

Charles was hospitalised after the war at Dunedin where he underwent two major operations. One was on his eyes because of desert sand damage while in the Camel Corps in Egypt. The other one was to his back. This was the first operation of its kind ever performed there. Dr. While of Dunedin was the surgeon and he grafted nine inches of shinbone to the upper spine. Charles was in plaster for about two years and he never suffered any ill-effects when it was healed.

In later life Charles helped Jack Ammon drain the swamps around Te Awamutu where Sam Ammon and Norm Verity were in charge of the Drainage Board under the Bob Semple Government scheme.

While Charles was in the war his wife had a child with another man and they were divorced. The judge placed his daughter Monnie with the grandmother, Catherine, who was married to Jack McBride - the station master of a small station just south of Te Kuiti at Puketutu. Monnie came by train to the convent school in Te Kuiti. Samuel Ammon had walked out of her life, sold the farm and had gone to Tasmania.

The main trunk line was relocated from Aria to Mangapehi and Taumarunui and McBride was part of that. Family source. AWMM
