    Posted to D Company, 22nd Infantry Reinforcements, and embarked on board HMNZT No 73 'Aparima', Wellington, 16 February 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 2 May 1917, and posted to 4th (Reserve) Battalion, Canterbury & Otago Regiments, Sling Camp, Salisbury Plain.
    Found guilty, 4 June 1917, of overstaying leave when on active service from 31 May to 2 June 1917; awarded 72 hours' detention and forfeited three days' pay; total forfeiture six days' pay by award of Commanding Officer.

    Admitted to No 3 New Zealand General Hospital, Codford, 13 August 1917 (confusional insanity); transferred to Tidworth Military Hospital, 16 August 1917; transferred to Napsbury War Hospital, St Albans, 17 August 1917.
    Classified unfit for active service (mania) and placed on New Zealand Roll, London, 10 September 1917.
    Commenced return to New Zealand from Avonmouth, Bristol, on board HMNZHS 'Marama', 21 November 1917; disembarked New Zealand, 1 January 1918.
    Discharged, no longer physically fit for war service (mania), 23 February 1918.
