  • Charles Horace Couchman was my grandfather, and I have a transcript of his World War 1 diary for 1917 to 1918. The brief but vivid entries detail his service in France and Belgium, leading up to the Battle of Passchendaele. He took part in the storming of Passchendaele Ridge on 12th October 1917 - and survived, though in July 1918 he was wounded in France and eventually repatriated. I plan to post a scan of this diary on the website soon, and I'll be attending the Passchendaele centenary commemorations in Belgium in the week before and after 12th October 2017, to honour the memory of my grandfather, and to represent other descendants of his who are resident in New Zealand and unable to attend.
