  • Member of the New Zealand Alpine Club:

"Alex was a man who remembered every kindness shown to him, and in turn he tried to show the same attitude to others who needed a helping hand. Graham hospitality became a by-word. That he was let down on occassion made no difference in his attitude to the next person. Alex preferred to see only the best in people.

At the outbreak of World War I, Alex enlisted for service overseas. He was twice wounded, and was also awarded the Military Medal. It was whilte he was on active service that an interesting and happy coincidence befall him. While on leave in London, he looked up the brother of his old friend, Arthur Woodham, who had supplied him with the address. There Alex met the brother's daughter, Louise Woodham, and in due course, married her."

(from the New Zealand Alpine Journal, Vol.XVII, No.44, 1957)

First rank was listed as Temporary Lance Corporal AWMM
