  • Subsequent to his discharge from NZEF and the Somes Island Guard, Patrick Connolly returned to the sea. In 1918, he was engaged on ss Simplon as an Able Seaman. The vessel was chartered by the New Zealand Government in 1918 for minesweeping and the crew including Cook were provided with the charter. They were assisted by Royal Australian Naval Brigade (RANB) which was responsible for exploding the discovered mines that had previously been laid by the german raider Wolf.

    On 1 May 1918 whilst mooring the Simplon at Nelson, Able Seaman Connolly got his foot entangled in the rope and his foot had to be amputated at Nelson Hospital. AWMM
