  • Son of Mr. G. H. and Mrs. J. E. Looney, of Moturoa, Taranaki.

"In connection with the wounding of Private Rupert Nicholls, Inglewood, at the Dardanelles, particulars received disclose an act of great heroism on the part of Private Looney, of Oaonui [sic]. It appears that Nicholls was wounded at six o'clock in the morning, and after lying in the trenches until nine o'clock at night, he was carried to the rear under fire by Private Looney. The latter received a shot to the stomach as he rose after laying his comrade down, and was instantly killed." (from an article entitled 'Deed Of Heroism', Auckland Weekly News, 24 June 1915, p. 18) AWMM
