  • I am so proud of you Grandad. Only now as an adult can I begin to comprehend your wonderful acts of bravery and suffering you endured in the trenches of Passchendaele. When you came to live with us I was just a little girl and my memories are of a man who loved gardening and whitebaiting. Your keen blue eyes missed nothing and I remember the time you shot a rabbit from our terrace some 200 yards or more away. You also had a lovely singing voice. I wish I could talk to you now and ask you about the war that you so bravely fought in and somehow managed to survive. I know it took it's toll on you as Mum and Dad told me you were gassed and the cold caused bad arthritis in your legs. The emotional toll you kept to yourself. I wish I had understood more then but I can say with tears in my eyes and love in my heart that you are truly appreciated and now and forever.
