  • Robert was the son of Frederick Johnson & Martha BROOKS (nee Prescott). Frederick was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England. Martha was born in NZ and both her parents were from Ireland. The family settled and lived in Ruakaka, Northland, NZ.
    They had nine children – Edith Rachel (b1885), Frederick George (b1889), Arthur Johnson (b1891), Ellen Mary (b1892), Martha Matilda (b1894), Fanny (b1896), Lottie (b1896), Robert James (b1898) and George Wilfred (b1900).
    Three brothers enlisted and served overseas during WW1. Frederick George (13/1011) & Arthur Johnson (13/1010) both enlisted on the 13th Feb 1915. Robert (44625) enlisted later on the 11th Dec 1916.
    Robert was discharged on the 2nd Sep 1918 due to being no longer physically fit for war service on account of wounds received in action. He was wounded on 12 Oct 1917 at Ypres, Belgium.
