  • I was lucky enough to visit Great Uncle Jacks grave in France together with my husband, daughter, son and their partners in Jan 2013. We did a mini Anzac Service at his grave with hubby playing the Last Post on a borrowed instrument, and my kids reading the RSA Ode and Keatings poem about men in a far off land. Although hubby has played for over 50 years at Anzac Services, he found it very moving playing in a cemetery, rather than in front of a war memorial. A lady walking past realized what we were doing, stopped took off her hat and bowed her head until we were finished. Amazing respect 100 years on. The most sobering moment of all was watching our 4 in their early 20's, wandering around the graves reading the ages on some of the headstones, of men younger than them. Jacks mother also visited his grave in 1921. You, or your sacrifice will never be forgotten Uncle Jack.
