  • Neil John McFadgen was my great uncle, youngest brother to my grandfather. Neil was born on 23 September 1897 in Woodlands, near Invercargill. Parents were George McFadyen/McFadgen and Kate Kavanagh. Neil enlisted on 27 June 1916. He had two medals, one the British War Medal, the other the Victory Medal. Death cert states: Neil John McFadgen, railway fireman, Somes Island. Born Woodlands, single, Pte 3rd O.I?.R. 27923 died 31 August 1917 France, killed in action, certificate of acting chief clerk, base records. C.A. Mathieson, action Chief Clerk, base records, Wellington. He was with the Otago Regiment. One of many brave men who fought in a dreadful conflict, and one of many who didn't come home again.
