    • Son of Elizabeth McFarlane, of 29, Valley Rd., Mount Eden, Auckland, and the late James Leash McFarlane. Native of Petone, Wellington AWMM
    • In the hours before his death, McFarlane(24) carried injured 17 year old Trooper Robert James MacDonell, down to ANZAC Cove from a 10 hour fight on Chunak Bair. He returned to his post and was killed.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

John 15:13 in all English translations

We, the family of Trooper Robert James MacDonell, are eternally grateful for this sacrifice. Public - Gael - Direct descendant - 27 May 2016 - family info
    • The following is an excerpt from a letter a letter written by Trooper Harry Browne from his hospital bed in Hornchurch to his family in New Zealand. Harry was one of the very few who survived the bloody heights of Chunuk Bair.
In the letter he mentions the death of Stewart McFarlane twice
"Meanwhile young Duky McDonnell, our bombing boy, had been wounded and in carrying him out [to safety] our splendid Sergeant Stuart McFarlane was killed. "
      and
"However, while I was away our troop Sergt. Stu McFarlane was killed. Our bombing boy Duky McDonnell had been wounded by a bomb. He was the youngest of us all and big Mac always kept a special eye on him. From what I was told, he was carrying him to a safer spot, when another bomb landed and big Mac went out in three minutes."
The letter can be found online http://www.nzmr.org/browne/browne.html

The events Trooper Browne relates were reflected by my father, who was a nephew of Stewart McFarlane's. My father said he had been shot in the back carrying a young guy off the battlefield. • 'Killed At The Dardanelles'
The Wellington Branch desires to place on record its deepest sympathy with the relatives of the late D. S. McFarlane, killed in action at the Dardanelles. His old comrades mourn the loss of one whose life was clean, his actions and dealings above reproaches, and a staunch comrade in every sense of the word.
