  • From the diary of my Grandfather - John William Murphy. Tues 13 August 1918 - At 8.30 the Sgt came for me to go orderly for Lieutenant J McGovern, I went and see him then got his dugout ready for him, that was all I done all day - Fine day. Thurs 5 Sept - Doing nothing but waiting orders - Received 30 Francs from Lt McGovern - wet morning, fine day. Tues 1 October 1918 - Up at 11 oclock and march over the canal and hop of at 6 oclock (?) we got set ? up and my boss stop a bullet in the stomach and I took him out but he died before he got to the dressing station,......Fine day. PS - By all accounts Joseph was well liked and had considerable respect amongst his troop.
