“Trooper Alex .D. D. McKay, killed at Gallipoli, was the third son of Mr J.M. McKay J.P. of Mountfield , Waipu, and was aged 31 years. He was educated at North River, Waipu, and joined the Post and Telegraph department of the Civil Service as a very young lad. He soon made good headway, and filled important positions in several of the North Island post offices, having put several years in at Whangarei and Waipu, having acted as relieving officer at the latter place. As a postal officer he was very highly esteemed, being particularly thoughtful and attentive in assisting those who at any time needed assistance in the discharge of their postal business. Alex McKay, at the outbreak of war, was the ‘first to enlist for the front” from Waipu, and set an example which has since been followed by nearly all eligible Waipu men.
At the time of leaving, he was a very enthusiastic member of both the Waipu Agricultural Association and the Waipu Caledonian Society. There is another brother (Edwin) at the Front, who went with the Fifth reinforcements.” (Auckland Star 10 September 1915) Public - Sandra - Other relative - 1 June 2018 - Waipu Museum
