MR. ARTHUR YOUNG VETERAN OF 1914-18 The death occurred on Thursday of a well-known member of the timber trade in Gisborne, Mr. Arthur Young, who for many years had been machinist for Messrs. Cave Bros, & Odlins’ Limited, successively Mr. Young had been in fair health until recently, but had suffered increasing trouble with his health in recent months, & he collapsed yesterday on the eve of his entry to hospital for treatment. Mr. Young was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne. England, and accompanied his parents to New Zealand at the age of 13 years. He was apprenticed to Mr George Smith a prominent Gisborne builder and timber-merchant, and became an expert machinist, at which trade he continued up to the time of his death.
He was an early volunteer for overseas service in the 1st N.Z.E.F.. & went overseas with the Wellington Infantry Regiment, serving three years’ and nine months abroad After his return to Gisborne, he took a keen interest in the regimental association, and in the affairs of the Returned Services’ Association, and also was a member of the I.O.O. F. (American Order). When the National Military Reserve was called into being in the early stages of the war, he volunteered his services and later was mobilized with No. 8 Company, which later became the 8th Independent Infantry Company, for home defence. He was a popular member of that unit, and his death will be noted with deep regret by many of his former comrades. Shortly after the last war Mr. Young married Miss Lena Harriet Fitzsimmons, who survives him with two sons. Messrs. R. A. Young and F J. Young, both of Gisborne. His parents also reside in Gisborne, and he has two brothers, Messrs. M. Young and J. R. Young, resident in the district. The funeral will take place today a service being held at Cochrane’s chapel at 1.45 p.m. prior to the departure for the Taruheru cemetery.
