    Private Frank John McKenzie, of the Auckland Battalion, who died of wounds on Bologne Hospital on March 1, was the only son of Mr Murdoch McKenzie, of Whangarei Heads. He received his education at the Heads school and at the Whangarei High School. He was for two years probationary teacher at the Hora Hora School, and studied for one year at the Training College, Auckland. He enlisted at the age of 20 years and went to the trenches on September 1. He was slightly wounded in the knee by shrapnel in the battle of the Somme on September 28, necessitating his being in hospital 13 days.
