    • Son of Colonel Charles ER Mackesy, D.S.O., and Jessie Mackesy of Whangarei, New Zealand. Col. Mackesy was briefly the Commanding Officer (CO) of the Auckland Mounted Rifles on Gallipoli.

Mackey's two brothers, Charles and William, also served with the Auckland Mounted Rifles. They survived to the end of the war along with their father. See Col. Mackesy's separate entry in Cenotaph for more details.

Mackesy was the New Zealand Mounted Rifle Brigade's Bombing Officer.

He was a Lieutenant in the North Auckland Mounted Rifles but resigned his commission and accepted the rank of Sergeant to get away quicker.

There is some discrepancy as to Henry Mackesy's wife's identity. His next-of-kin at enlistment is given as "Mrs H E Mackesy (wife), Kamo, Whangarei", but the Commonwealth War Graves Commission states that his wife was "Gertrude A Mackesy, of 76 Vauxhall Rd, Devonport, [Auckland], New Zealand"). Considering that he enlisted in 1914 and was killed in 1915, spending much if not all of that time with the army, it is rather unlikely, although not impossible, that he remarried before meeting his death at Gallipoli. AWMM
    • Henry (known as Harry) was married to Gertrude Barnes before the war and they had two children, Phyllis and Freddie. Freddie died at a very young age and is buried at O'Neill's Cemetery in Bayswater Road. Mrs H E Mackesy was Gertrude and during the war she lived at 76 Vauxhall Road, Devonport. Phyllis had one son, Donal, who moved to Australia in the seventies and he has three girls. Public - Judith - 16 April 2015 - Oral family history - Gertrude Mackesy was my great-grandmother
