  • In memory of the trials and hardships you must have endured on the Western Front in Northern France and for the terrible battles and bombardments I have established that you went through during the German spring offensive of 1918 until your capture by them on the 5.4.18 somewhere near Le Signy farm, Colincamps, Somme, I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration. Your bravery, determination and duty, and those of your comrades in the New Zealand Rifle Brigade in facing and holding back the enemies onslaught remains an example to us all. And although you had passed on before I was born, Mum (Melva) always told us that although you would never speak about the war, (and I think I understand why) she did say that after being a POW in Germany that you refused to eat cabbage ever again! With much respect, your grandson, David
