    • Herbert Ellis was the son of Arthur and Elizabeth Ellis, of Fernside, Canterbury, New Zealand. AWMM
    • Early on he went sawmilling in southern Hawkes Bay with his brother Arthur. Looking for better career prospects he volunteered and was accepted for the Royal Navy, and served on several British warships. After completing his time he settled to farming in Canterbury. When war broke out he volunteered for the army but they weren’t taking any volunteers. So in 1915 he volunteered for the army.
