- MR. L. W. GRACE
The death of Mr. Laurence William te Heuheu Grace, a member of a well known Wellington family, occurred at a private hospital in Wellington yesterday. He caught a chill early in January, and complications set in. An operation was unsuccessful. The eldest son of Lawrence Marshall Grace and the late Te Kahui te Heuheu Grace. He was born in 1888 at Pukawa, Lake Taupo, where his grandfather, the Rev. T. S. Grace, had a mission station. For some time he lived with his uncle, Archdeacon T. S. Grace, of Blenheim. He attended the Blenheim Borough School and Wellington College, and was for some years a member of the college senior Rugby team. He then went to Canterbury University College to study law, and was later admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court. Mr. Grace was a member of the New Zealand Universities' Rugby team which went to Australia just before the Great War. He then joined the Auckland legal firm of Earl and Kent. He enlisted and sailed with the 24th Reinforcements, Wellington Battalion. Wounded in France, Lieut. Grace returned to New Zealand on the hospital ship Marama in 1919, and then joined the legal branch of the Public Trust Office, Wellington, before leaving to enter the Native Department. He was a brother of Lieut. T. P. M. ("Hami") Grace, who was killed at Gallipoli. He is survived by his father and five sisters and two brothers—Miss B. W. Grace (London), Mrs. A. P. Ornberg (Maryborough), Mrs. B. S. Gribbin (Wellington), Mrs. H. S. Pox (Christchurch), Mrs. D. Barling (Wellington), Dr. E. F. T. Grace (London), and Mr. H. H. Grace (Wellington). The body will be taken to the village of Waihi, Lake Taupo, where his mother was buriedPublic - Lorraine Mona - Researcher - 10 January 2025 - Evening Post, Volume CXIII, Issue 63, 15 March 1932, Page 8 - Memorial name
