Before coming to New Zealand in 1911 he served with the English Education Department as a physical instructor. He trained at the Southport Collage of Physical Education and at the Army School at Aldershot. He entered private practice in New Zealand and was a instructor at St Patrick's and St Mary's Collages, Wellington until he went overseas with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in WW1. After the 2nd battle of the Somme he was appointed Director of Physical and Bayonet Training, New Zealand Division in France. He represented New Zealand at a special course of remedial work for wounded soldiers in London. After rhe war he took up duties as physical director of Wellesley Collage and the Wellington YMCA and later Scots Collage. He was a co-founder of the New Zealand Society of Physical Education and was a Fellow of both the British and the New Zealand Society.
