My father Vic was conscripted in 1917, trained as a signaller and left for war on the Tofua, calling at Albany Australia on the way. He kept a diary for the first part of the journey but seemed to have got bored with it and filled some of the book with entries on accounting and economics. He was training to be an accountant at the time. He arrived in England and was stationed at Sling the NZ army camp in Wiltshire. Soon after his arrival he contracted Influenza, which was rampant at the time,and was some time recovering. He told us a story about how, when he recovered, he and a couple of others went into Winchester to see the cathedral, and while in the grounds,they spotted a senior officer walking around so they quickly hid behind some grave stones.
