A return serviceman he was returning from Europe after the first world war and was quaranteened on Sommes island in Wellington Harbour. He was arrested before the 21 days was up as everyman that was on the island had run out of cigarettes so he decided to swim to Petone to buy some. A quote that came about afterwards was "them Rarotongans fear nothing but themselves."
