As a former Commanding Officer of the Auckland Northland Battalion, I was surprised and humbled when my brother Craig discovered Great Uncle Herbert's details in the Cenotaph records. We are a family with some tradition of military service (both historical and current) it was quite an oversight for us not to even be aware of him and his service to his country.

Like so many of the young men of his era, he was taken from us at the Battle of Ypres and I look forward to paying my respects to him when next in Europe.

We shall remember them.
