Father was on the Achilles in Singapore when they were called to help after the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. His health suffered dreadfully as a result and all of his 7 children were born either with health defects or developed serious diseases; three died young. My father was a gentle loving man who loved the sea and while he never talked about the war he continued to love sailing. I remember as a young child the Achilles sailed back into Wellington and he took us aboard and proudly showed us his ship and invited several officers home to dinner. i organised for his medals and he finally agreed to attend an ANZAC service in his 80th year. He passed away peacefully 11 months later.
