My great grandmother's brother, Jim Green was 2nd Lieut C B McClure's batman and was alongside him at Bellevue Spur, Zonnebeke (Passchendaele) on 12 October 1917. Jim was posted missing after the battle, as C B McClure acknowledged in a letter to Jim's father written on 29 December 1917. Such confusion and anxiety. But McClure, who was injured himself and had witnessed Jim's death and heard his last words (or so he wrote), had the compassion and humanity to write three pages to Jim's father. It provided much relief and closure for Jim's dad, his sister and Jim's fiancee, Ivy. I agree, he was a great man.
