He had been wounded in France and was eventually transported back to Walton, in England. In one part he writes " I was hoisted into bed there at 1.30am and very kindly received by a pleasant faced nurse who came from Hamilton, knew the Jameses and asked if I knew Barclay, of whose vicissitudes she was able to give me an account. She was, I think, about the nicest NZ nurse I have met, tho' they are all first rate. She had been at the work a good while and her last trip had been on the same transport with J.W.B and the 22nds. Her name is Sanderson". I looked up the records and found this entry for Ruth Sanderson, which seems to fit the timing. My grandfather was Gerard Henry Nicholls 18897.
