He enlisted on the 14th of June 1915.On the 14th August 1915 he boarded the troopship Tofua in Wellington, as a trooper, with his unit the Wellington Mounted Rifles. The Tofua was in convoy with the Willochra, a total of 2,363 persons of the 6th reinforcements departed New Zealand that day.Their destination was Egypt and on the 19th September 1915 George would spend the next 4 years and 40 days serving his country in Egypt, Lemnos in Greece, Belgium and France arriving back in New Zealand on the 21st September 1919. His efforts were rewarded with the British war medal and the Victory medal. He was discharged from service on the 27th March 1920.
