My father, Allan Lionel Alfred Field, was a farmer and soldier who served in the Pacific in World War 2. He was named after two of his uncles: Alfred Thornley Field, his father's brother, and Lionel George Fougere, his mother's brother. After fighting in the rearguard action at Gallipoli, Alfred traveled to France and died on the Somme on 15th September 1916; Lionel died, also on the Somme, on 16th September 1916. I wonder if they knew of or met each other beforehand? The memorial cenotaph at Hampden, North Otago, has Alfred's name inscribed, 9 names down, as "A. Feild SGT MJR". His widow, Tui, later married his cousin Lewis Henry Field on Lewis' return from four year's service in the same war. I wish I could have found out more about these remarkable men, before my grandparents, father, uncles and aunts died. It's too late, now.
