Uncle Dick, as he was known, was a much loved brother of my grandmother. There were I think 6 children; my grandmother was the eldest child and Dick was the second child and eldest son. My grandmother and he were close in age and it seems outlook. They apparently used to sneak off to local dances, with Dick organising a horse and gig in the moonlight. His father was a dairy farmer. Dick was quite tall for his age. Family talk was that he was often thought to be older than his years because of his height and build. Allegedly he lied about his age to enlist. I also recall extended family members saying the he lied about his age and enlisted because someone sent him a white feather. His death had a huge impact.
