Tom is mentioned in a letter from my Great Uncle (James MITCHELL) written to his mother on 9 September 1918, from Brockenhurst Hospital. The spelling and punctuation is as it is written in the letter. The excerpt reads - "I joined up with the 3rd Auckland unit my old terries and met a few of my old mates me and a cobe named Tom Gavin from Elleslie a fine fellow we went through all of it to gether and the day I got hit he went back for stew for tea when we got in jerries trench and I got hit and never saw him any more I just saw he got killed poor fellow."
