Gallipoli, Messines and Bapaume. He entered the war, a Major and ended a Brigadier-General. He was supposed, like Freyberg, to be a Dentist serving the community of Marton. However, post-war he was appointed General Officer Commanding NZ Military Forces and served as head of the army until he retired in March 1931. He is 1 of few GOC's not knighted. I am told he specifically refused a Knighthood. In 1940, he was back in service again as head of the NZ Home Guard, until it was no longer needed in 1944. His inspiration: to do the best I can as a humble New Zealander for NZ. My PopPop set an enduring example ... I will always hold in the greatest of esteem and shall never forget, despite never meeting him! Your reason for reporting this contribution Your name Your email address Cancel
