Tom was a friend of my great uncle, George P Berendt. They did their basic training together before they embarked for Egypt and went on to fight in France together. George was shot and killed on 31 March 1918. In 1938, in reply to an enquiry through the RSA, Tom wrote a letter to my grandfather (George's younger brother) telling him about George and their friendship. I will post a scan of this letter to this archive. The family must have really appreciated this letter from Tom, as George's sister kept it until her death in 1988, when my father (also George Berendt) discovered it amongst her belongings.
