I loved going to stay at Avalon with my Uncle Joe and Aunt Clar. Uncle used to allow us to help him on the farm. I can remember,as a child, asking him how he lost his arm. He replied "the Germans wanted it to make sausages!!" Such was his sense of humour. There were few things he was unable to do but he couldn't tie his tie or eat an egg from an egg cup. I remember the thrill my husband and I got when we found the letter written to his brother Ted in a rusty tin in a shed on the farm in Opotiki. We couldn't believe he had written it with his left hand.
