He enlisted in 1916. His mother, Clara, encouraged him to join the ambulance corp and he became a stretcher bearer. He served at the Somme and was overseas for 2 years and 154 days. He was very fortunate to come home and live a long happy life, dying at the age of 91. I knew him well, he made my brother and sister and I toffee every time we visited and told stories of his life.
