Note
Private Jack Day was my father. He enlisted from Kerrytown as a soldier in WW1 and served from 1917 until the war ended. Dad talked to us about being in the trenches and about chasing the troops back through France to Germany at the end of the war. He didn't return to NZ with the troops but went to England to meet his Grandfather. Later after returning to NZ he married Violet Smith. They lived at Kerrytown, Otaio where he worked for Martins, then St Andrews and eventually Pareora East where Dad was appointed Farm Manager at the freezing works. After the farm was closed down Dad worked in the sheep yards. Violet and Jack had 9 children Vida, Joan, Betty, John, Dessy, Hazel, Olive, Evelyn and Donald.
